Back in 1984, Richard Hayne and his first wife, Judy, opened the store in Pennsylvania. The store grew in popularity and quickly took to the likings of the young people within the area. Free people became Urban Outfitters for a short period of time until they decided to branch off and separate the stores. Free People got its name back and began their start online where sales grew and still remain the notorious bohemian brand they are today.

According to multiple sources, Free People (under same management as Anthropologie and Urban Outfitters) has come under fire a few times for racial profiling, inclusion issues, sealing small business designs and cultural appropriation. They’ve used code words to describe people of color to have employees monitor them. Native American pieces have been sold on their store for festival use. Now, Free People now has a "FP Commitments" page that outlines their new values and policies as well as "FP Care," their sustainability efforts, which include eco-consious, vintage, and more.
